Guyana's Independence - 42nd Anniversary

Guayana AssociationMay 28th 08 - Guyana's 42nd Anniversary of Independence - left to right - Michael Skellekie, Collette Jones, and Carl Thomas shared with us so much we didn't know about lush Guyana.

The history of Guyana began before the arrival of Europeans, when the region of present-day Guyana was inhabited by Carib, Arawak and Warao peoples. The word Guiana probably comes from the Arawak words wai ana which means "land of many waters".

Guyana gained full independence on May 26th 1966.

So much was discussed on this show. From what it feels like to land by Plane at the airport, to the drive to down town and the sights and sounds that greets visitors.

This was indeed a fun and exciting show as the guests took listeners on a journey through their homeland paradise.

They all joined in to sing the first verse of the National Anthem and later on during the show, the guests took to their feet dancing; as an old time favorite original Guyanese song was played. It was simply, fun and togetherness.

Guyana is the size of Idaho and is situated on the northern coast of South America, east of Venezuela, west of Suriname, and north of Brazil. A tropical forest covers more than 80% of the country.

There are two marked rainy seasons during the year - a long rainy season from April to August and a short rainy season from November to January.

Annual rainfall varies from about 90 inches on the coast to as much as 140 inches in the rain-forest areas. But in the savannahs where the dry periods are more prolonged, the average is only about 60 inches, with most of the rainfall occurring during the months of May to August.

Guyana is not affected by hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes or volcanoes and although the rains are sometimes delayed, prolonged or severe droughts are relatively rare.

Some places of interest mentioned by the guests are : St. Georges Cathedral, Stabroek Market, Umana Yana, Liberation Monument, Botanic gardens, kaieteur falls, Cheddi Jagan International Airport:Timehri.

For sure, Michael, Carl and Colette made us all want to take the next available flight to Guyana. Thank you guys for sharing with us and for making it fun. Happy Independence to all of you and to all Guyanese the world over.
