February 27th 08 - Commemorating the battle of Adua - Let's Talk guest Ijahnya Christian sat down with us for the hour, to explain the significance of the battle of Adua fought on March 1st 1896 between Ethiopia, led by Emperor Menelik and The Empress Taitu against Italy, near the town of Adwa Ethiopia.
It is said that the confrontation between Italy and Ethiopia at Adwa was a fundamental turning point in Ethiopian history; and though apparent to very few historians at the time, these defeats were the beginning of the decline of Europe as the center of world politics. March 1st is celebrated in Ethiopia, and also by Rastafari the world over.
Sister Ijahnya explained that on Anguilla, Rastafari will celebrate with a grand victory banquet which will be held at the Triple Crown Culture Yard on Mar 1st 08 at 8pm. She invited everyone to this garnd event - a vegetarian banquet with food supplied by some of the top restaurants on Anguilla will be served.
This defeat of a colonial power and the ensuing recognition of African sovereignty became rallying points for later African nationalists during their struggle for decolonization and March the 1st became an extremely important day of which we should all be aware.
March 1st is celebrated, as national day in Ethiopia, and the tumultuous events of the victory of Ethiopians over the invading Italian forces in the Battle of Adowa in 1896 are remembered every year with patriotic pride.
