Anguilla's Traffic

Saturday, March 15, 2008 8:52:39 AM

The traffic situation on AXA is now reason for concern. The traffic department has now gone public with announcements on safe driving with a campaign that involves the Governor's office and also the Government Departments in the UK.

So let’s examine what can happen by just driving a few miles over the limit.

If a driver hits a pedestrian at 20 mph, the pedestrian has a 95% chance of survival.

At 30 mph the survival chance is 80% and if a driver hits a pedestrian at 40 mph, the pedestrian's survival chances fall to just 10%.

Speeding increases the likelihood of an accident as well - an average car traveling at 35 mph will need an extra 21 feet (or six meters more to stop than one traveling at 30 mph.

Driving just a few miles over the limit vastly increases the risks if you crash.

So what happens now? Will seat belts become mandatory? And how about the use of car seats for children, and the use of cell phones while behind the wheel? I am sure we all have our horror stories.

Fact remains that something needs to be done and fast. The statistics are a bit alarming.

January - 34 road accidents

February - 42 road accidents with one fatality

March - 15 road accidents (by march12th)

So what do you think about AXA's Traffic situation? I know you have an opinion...so do tell us about it.

People

I hate rude people! I'm sorry, and I know that hate is a strong word which I don't like using at all. Infact; I don't use the word "hate" until the most extreme circumstances.

Have you ever been standing inline at  the supermarket, patiently waiting your turn; when someone with a few items just steps infront of you? They pretend like they don't even see you. They just feel its ok, because you have more items than they do, so no problems to step infront of you; all the time ascting as if you're invisible.

I mean how much kinder and easier would it be if they would just smile and ask if they can go ahead of you? I always allow it too. Sometimes they don't even have to ask. If they falll in line and I notice they only have a couple of items I will graciously allow them  to cash first.

"Manners maketh man!"  My father always said that...and as I go about my daily business I realise that this saying is so true. So avoid rude people at all cost...don't let them steal your joy. When someone blatantly disrespects you while you're standing  in a line, just smile and tell them...I see you're  in a hurry, and your time is obviously more precious than mine...I hope you'll have a great day." Trust me...that will get them to take stock of their Rudeness.
